Courtney Love sued for ‘malicious’ Twitter posts

Famous (or perhaps infamous?) rock star Courtney Love is being sued for defamation after posting ‘malicious’ comments on her Twitter and Myspace accounts about her former fashion designer, Dawn Simorangkir.

“According to a libel claim filed by Simorangkir in Los Angeles Superior Court March 26, Love used Twitter to disseminate “an obsessive and delusional crusade” of malicious libel against her. Simorangkir, who’s based in Austin, Texas, also claims Love slandered her on MySpace.”

It will be interesting to see how this one turns out. Other celebs, such as Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, are also dealing with Twitter troubles.

What do you think about celebs with Twitter accounts? Are they asking for trouble or should they be free to use to use the service along with the rest of the world?

  1. It is somewhat refreshing to see a high-profile Internet libel suit. It is terrifying that basically anyone can write anything with little to no repercussions, even if what they write would have been a clear case of libel had the content been published in a newspaper or magazine. And yes, celebrities should be free to use Twitter, but they shouldn’t be allowed to spread lies with impunity, just as “normal” people shouldn’t either.

I agree with Abby. Celebrities should be able to use Twitter but they must also abide by the same rules the average person does. Just because Twitter is a new social site does not mean what one posts will not have consequences. Celebrities also need to realize that Tweeting responsibly would be in their best interest as far as PR goes. Maybe Courtney Love needs a social networking lesson?

  3. Amen, ladies! I agree with both of you. I personally think it’s hilarious that celebs are using Twitter; don’t they get enough attention as it is? One would think that they would yearn for privacy whenever possible, but instead, they’re continuing to put their personal lives on display for the world to see.

And yes, Courtney Love does need a social networking lesson! I saw the “Tweets” that have gotten her in so much trouble – they were full of spelling errors and sometimes didn’t even make much sense. Whoever takes care of her PR definitely needs to monitor, if not take over, Love’s Twitter.
